Roland Briggs, Sheriff of a small town in Massachusetts in the early 1970s, the area must be committed first murders in fifteen years. Between personal Problems - an estranged family and a troubled affair with a married woman - and career problems - Memories of the work on a big city police who pursue him continue - Roland strives to make his job properly, although it is charged with political pressure and the nagging feeling of false perp. In between this mystery through flashbacks the story of the murderer, Victor, by abusing his progress from a cold-hearted orphan adults for revenge is detailed.
I loved the characterization In this novel, above all, the exhausted, angst-ridden sheriff who tries to find justification in his actions during a hot, illicit romance, while balancing his responsibilities at work. I also liked the perspective of the murderer, and how Stanton portrays his transformation from fear, abused child indefinitely a hellish life in a psychiatric department decided sentenced to a merciless killer who seek revenge on behalf of their abused siblings.
The outlier is an eye-opener as well as in their representation of the attitudes towards mentally disabled people in the 1950s and earlier. A book like this people should be angry, well, as it is. Stanton well researched the history of mental health facilities in the first half of the century, and the living nature of the treatment of these people are to read at times unbearable. The mention of "eugenics," as they cool to the story. It's just something that you have for yourself read. If you are interested in the stories of serial murders and crimes, the escapees is captivating to read one.
